Apr 24, 2013, 12:06pm MDT by Dan Mayfield, Reporter
505.348.8308 | dmayfield@bizjournals.com

Nationally, angel investment hasn’t rebounded from the Great Recession.

But locally, at least, New Mexico is heading in the right direction, John Chavez, president of the New Mexico Angels, said Wednesday at the Economic Forum of Albuquerque.

Nationally, the median angel investment has stayed relatively the same at around $600,000 for the last three years, according to the Angel Resource Institute.

The New Mexico Angels — the largest angel investment group in the state — haven’t invested that much annually, but the group has seen a steady increase in the amount of funding it has provided local companies.

In 2010, the Angels provided $750,000 in funding. In 2011, that number rose to $1.3 million, and to $1.6 million in 2012. Already in 2013, Chavez said, the Angels have invested $490,000 in two ventures.

As the New Mexico Angels have grown their investment amounts, venture capital investments, and funds, have shrunk in the last two years.

“It has been a struggle for VC because the asset class has performed really horrible,” Chavez said. “In New Mexico, kudos to the [State Investment Council]. A lot of money went into a lot of deals and we’re excited about the new Sierra Ventures investment and we’re working with Sun Mountain.”

Since 2005, Chavez said the New Mexico Angels have invested $6 million in startup companies. Some of those deals have been as small as $7,500 per investor. Some have been four times that size.

Though angel investments are traditionally high-risk, those that have paid off their investments have provide a 400 to 700 percent return, Chavez said.

An excerpt of the article is below:

“Albuquerque-based Vibrant Corp. has raised $680,000 from local investors to help manage rapidly expanding demand for its aircraft-component testing services.

The Verge Fund, the New Mexico Angels and other individual investors contributed to Vibrant’s latest capital raise, which brings the company’s total private equity since launching in 2007 to more than $3 million.

The new investment provides Vibrant – which conducts non-destructive testing on aircraft parts with proprietary technology originally developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory – with ready capital to cover expenses for services to manufacturing and repair companies, said President and CEO Lem Hunter.

“This lets us respond to customer requests without blinking,” Hunter said. “If we get a call (for services) from Singapore, we need to be able to say ‘yes’ right away without worrying where to get the $10,000 to send two people there for two weeks.”

Technology Ventures Corporation’s Deal Stream Summit serves as a vehicle to facilitate private investment partnerships between emerging technologies within the lab, start-ups and innovators. Through the years, this conference has allowed for hundreds of companies to receive funding and fueled the commercialization of laboratory R&D and IP. With unique challenges facing the innovation landscape and investment arena, traditional early stage VCs and corporate strategics are embracing avenues to cultivate cutting-edge technology and serve the entrepreneurial partner. Given this, venture investors and corporations are identifying promising technologies harvested within national research labs, innovation centers, and government agencies, as well as surveying next generation start-ups and business models, for potential investments.
Given TVC’s unique position in the market to support technology commercialization and startup initiatives, we are proud to continue the tradition of fostering investment partnerships between private equity professionals, national laboratories and startups through the presentation of the Deal Stream Summit in New Mexico, April 2-4 at the Hyatt Tamaya near Albuquerque, NM.

This annual conference is focused on starting, building and financing research-based technology, as well as startups and entrepreneurship from the lab.

In-depth dialogue on term structures, deal partnerships, investment approaches and best practices to serve the innovator will be addressed at length, and the most promising business models and emerging growth companies will be displayed.

Audience Profile: venture capitalists, startups, research & development scientists, DOE laboratory technology, tech transfer executives from government and national labs, licensing officers, private equity investors, corporate development and new business development executives, corporate investors, corporate counsel, and spinout companies. This conference has both a life sciences and technology focus and will feature CEOs in the presenting company showcase.

Harvard Entrepreneur. This entrepreneur has a degree from Harvard, which they value immensely. They are brilliant in their own mind but can’t find the coffee shop that you have met with them at three times previously. They want your money but not your advice and input.

Selling to Google Entrepreneur: This entrepreneur entire business plan is selling their business to Google. They point out that Google has purchase over 800 companies in the last four years. They can’t describe their product or market, just that Google will purchase the business. Be especially careful if their company is a medical device company.

Like Facebook Entrepreneur: This entrepreneur has an idea for a company just like Facebook but for seniors, artist, cowboys, cowgirls, etc. Their business plan consists of membership dues, advertising and product placements. They will attract their customers via viral marketing, but can’t articulate why we need another social media website.

Drinking Their Own Kool-Aid Entrepreneur: This entrepreneur is an advocate for social change via their business model. They live and breathe their product and market. They testify to anyone that will listen. When making an investor pitch they lecture the investors on how smart they are and how dumb the investors are if they don’t do a deal with them.

My IP is Very Valuable Entrepreneur: This entrepreneur believes their idea will change the world and they should be compensated as such. A typical deal proposed by this type of entrepreneur is they own 95% of the company, investors 5%. The IP for the company is held by a separate company owned by the entrepreneur. The company which has been funded by investor money pays a royalty to the entrepreneur owned company. And, the entrepreneur gets paid a salary of $250K. Not many of these deals get done.

Has Been Entrepreneur: This entrepreneur hit it really big 15 years ago. Their last venture backed company blew up big time. They float between technology providers and venture capital funds lending their expertise for a fee. They have lots of deals in the works but can’t raise money for any of them. Of their deals, they don’t have the time or money to move the company forward but they do want an ownership stake and a salary for their efforts. Hangs out with the Has-Been-Angel, and together they are planning world domination. Enjoys a good drink as long as someone else picks up the tab.

John Chavez and the New Mexico Angels were featured in an article by Inc Magazine today. The article “Finding Innovation in the Rough” by Julie Goonewardene outlines how Chavez utilizes university technologies to create start-up companies. An excerpt from the article below.

“John Chavez is always on the hunt for the next big idea. Literally. The president of the New Mexico Angels and tax secretary to former governor Gary Johnson spends hours each month trolling the research labs of the University of New Mexico, visiting with scientists and their graduate assistants. John knows universities are fertile ground for raw technology with potentially lucrative commercial applications.”

Not only are the Angels jumping on early technologies out of UNM via STC.UNM, but the Angels have founded companies like IPHC and New Mexico Start-Up Factory. These entities are designed to put seed funding into new technologies, create a corporate structure and commercialization plan, while validating the technology. The newly created start-ups are then ready to seek funding!
