Mini Angels Boot Camp” – A Seminar/Workshop

This seminar/workshop will introduce entrepreneurs to equity financing and how to how to pitch to Angels. Learn about Venture capital and how it is different from angel investing.​

  • 6:00pm-6:30pm: Registration & Networking
  • 6:30pm-7:30pm: Angel Investing (about Angels, what Angels look for in investments, how to get involved, how to pitch to Angels)
  • 7:30pm – 7:40pm: Short Break
  • 7:40pm – 8:15pm: Venture Capital (what it is, how it’s different than angel investing, what vcs look for, how to engage a vc)
  • 8:15pm – 8:30pm: How the Catalyst Fund will affect companies seeking funding


John Chavez is President of and active investor in the New Mexico Angels, as well as Managing Director of New Mexico Start-Up Factory and Phase One Ventures. Additionally, he is president of Tafoya and Brainerd Partners LLC, a nationwide business development consulting firm.

Prior to this, Chavez was cabinet secretary of the Taxation and Revenue under New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson for six years and president of the Federation of Taxation Administrators. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the UNM Anderson School Foundation. Chavez is a frequent guest lecturer on entrepreneurship and serves on a number of start-up boards. He earned a BA in Economics, BBA in Finance, and an MBA from New Mexico State University.​

Dr. John W. Elling, Ph.D. is General Partner at Phase One Ventures, a venture fund investing in technologies at the intersection of biotechnology and nanotechnology, based in Santa Fe, NM. Dr. John Elling has founded and led a series of technology based start-ups, consistently building and exiting at a profit. He has also served in a Founder/CEO/President role with a number of prior companies including Incitor, Acoustic Cytometry Systems, Mesa Tech, Greffen Systems, MitoTech, Integrated Genomics, Cytoprint and Bioreason. Additionally he has experience at Los Alamos National Laboratory as both employee Technical Staff Member and as a Visiting Entrepreneur. John received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin and received his MBA from the Anderson School of Business at the University of New Mexico.

Dorian Rader is the Vice President of the New Mexico Angels and Executive Director of New Mexico Start-Up Factory, a technology transfer organization that licenses innovations from New Mexico research institutions and creates investable high-tech companies from those technologies.  An experienced water entrepreneur herself, Dorian has launched seven high-tech companies, including Ecopesticides International in Santa Fe.

With a background in marketing and operations, she has a proven track record of taking companies from idea to industry, while ensuring the formation of a stable corporate infrastructure. She has worked with the University of New Mexico patent office sits on a number of start-up company boards and helps her husband with his company, Outlaw Mechanical. She has a BA from the University of New Mexico in Entrepreneurial Studies.
